Summer at the Main Library's StoryLab

StoryLab is offering a series of weeklong workshops for teens this summer. Students should bring their own bag lunch, water and snacks.

Registration is required for each of the workshops. Reservations can be made by telephoning the library at (253) 292-2001, Ext 2, or or follow the links to our events calendar below.

Computer Programming with Scratch 
Session 1 - Girls only - Ages 13-19

Scratch introduces you to coding and allows you to build animations, games, and other multi-media interactive web creations. This class is available for ages 11-17, but is primarily intended for ages 11-15. If students 13+ want to challenge themselves further, they may sign up for the follow-up session on Unity. There will time provided for working on your own projects after-class. Participants must attend both days.

Unity is an advanced game development program which creates interactive 3D and 2D content. It is recommended for students who have mastered Scratch or who have prior experience with coding. There will time provided for working on your own projects after-class. Participants must attend all 3 days.

Learn about color and composition, light and shadows and the joy of getting off auto mode. Use Adobe Lightroom to bring out the best in every shot with its powerfully simple one-click adjustments and a full range of cutting-edge advanced controls. Bring your DSLR camera (or use one of ours), walking shoes, and a desire for adventure. Participants must attend all 5 days.
Please note: there will be a pop-up exhibition of class work on Saturday, August 2 & Sunday, August 3 at a downtown location TBA.

Voice Over Workshop for Teens
Friday, July 25 @ 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
In this workshop, we will take a step-by-step approach working as a voice-over artist - from working with a microphone to the business side of being a successful voice over artist. You will learn to read and interpret various types of text, the basics of staying focused and able to perform under the pressure of a recording session, and ways of quickly and effectively interpreting copy. You will have the opportunity to rehearse and record your own work. Registration is required.

Intro to Game Design Using Twine & GameMaker
Monday, August 11 through Friday, August 15
@ 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. daily
Students will learn how to design a game using Twine, Game Maker and non-digital games, with a focus on how interaction affects a narrative. This course will require students to play games as well as talk about their experiences, to understand what makes a great, playable game. Students will explore two different game design technologies that make vastly different games. Registration is required. When you register for the Monday class, you are registering for the entire week.

Make Tracks With Studio One
Tuesday, August 19 & Wednesday, August 20
@ 1 - 5 p.m. daily
PreSonus' Studio One is a complete music creation and production software that offers easy drag-and-drop functionality and powerful editing tools to take your music to the next level. Learn the basics of multi-track recording using real and virtual instruments, applying special effects, creating genre-specific treatments (Rap/Dub-Step/Electronica) and working collaboratively with others to achieve a great production. If you are frustrated with the complexities or limitations of Logic, Garage Band or other production software this is a workshop you will want to attend. Registration is required.
