How do I exhibit my artwork in the Handforth Gallery?

The Main Library's Handorth Gallery offers local and regional artists and arts organizations the opportunity to have artwork featured in six-week exhibitions. Work can be flat (the Gallery has 550' of linear wall space- room for 2- 35 framed pieces) or three dimensional (for display cases). Gallery shows are booked up to 12 months in advance. There is no cost to exhibit at the gallery and the Library takes no commission on sales.

Types of exhibitions

  • Two or three individual artists (with 10 - 15 pieces per artist). While the gallery has featured the work of one artist in an exhibition, this is a rare occurance and depends on the body of work. Priority is given to Tacoma / Pierce County artists though all artists are encouraged to submit materials.
  • Group exhbitions (for example,  the Puget Sound Sumi Association or the Tacoma Arts & Crafts Association);
  • Curated exhibitions (for example, Lead Thread - an exhibit of handmade books curated by Jessica Spring of Springtime Press)
  • Exhibitions from other venues (for example, Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature from the National Library of Medicine).

To apply:
Please submit a portfolio including professional resume, 8 - 10 slides or color prints of your work, and an artist's statement. If applaying as an organization, submit slides that represent the breadth of the members' work. If applying to curate an exhibition, please detail your vision of the exhibition, funding resources (if necessary) and potential artists.
