The Tacoma Public Library welcomes and encourages volunteer participation.

Community volunteers provide much-needed assistance as genealogy researchers, program and event aides, crowd organizers, summer reading club assistants, book sale workers, bulletin board decorators, along with working on special projects. With over 75 special programs yearly, there is always a need for someone who desires to help build a community of readers (or even design and craft a dazzling bulletin board).  Please stop by any library location and complete the volunteer form. Are you 16 or 17 years old? Have a parent complete the Parental Authorization form

Current volunteer opportunities

Tacoma Reads Together:    Participate in community outreach and publicity to encourage and increase participation.  Distribute posters, event schedules, reading guides.  Help plan and promote special events such as lectures, Community Conversations, readings and movie festivals.  Develop and lead book discussions at Library locations and throughout the community.

Special Events. Ongoing. From booktalks by visiting authors and opening receptions (and installation of art) at the Handforth Gallery to film screenings, concerts, staffing library booths at fairs & farmers' markets and ... well, lots more, the Tacoma Public Library produces a host of special programs each year. Our need for volunteers varies by the event but volunteer assistance is always welcome and a lot of fun!

Cleaning of Children's Books: Year-round.  Wipe down and clean covers of children's books to preserve them for continued use.  Return cleaned books to shelves.

Summer Reading Club: June-August.  Assist staff with Summer Reading Club activities for children at various branches.  This may include data entry, distribution of prizes and assisting staff with various tasks.  Assist at the awards celebration and party at the Point Definace Zoo & Aquarium in late August.

StoryLab:  Provide technical support and guidance for teens in the use of various software applications and external hardware, such as video cameras and microphones.
