Questions and answers about the pilot reciprocal agreement between the Tacoma Public Library and the Pierce County Library system.

The Tacoma Public Library and the Pierce County Library system have entered into a reciprocal agreement which allows Tacoma residents to get a free card from the Pierce County Library system AND residents within the Pierce County Library services district to get a free card from the Tacoma Public Library.

Have the two library systems merged?
No. They continue to be two separate library systems with their individual loan periods, fines and policies.

Can I check out materials from the Tacoma Public Library with my Pierce County Library card?
You must have a card from the Tacoma Public Library in order to check out books and other materials from the Tacoma Public Library.

Can I check out materials from Pierce County Library with my Tacoma Public Library card?
You must have a card from the Pierce County Library in order to check out books and other materials from the Pierce County Library.

Where do I go to get a card?
You can only get a Tacoma Public Library card from the Tacoma Public Library.
You can only get a Pierce County Library card from the Pierce County Library.

What Tacoma residents are eligible for a Pierce County Library Card?
Every resident of the City of Tacoma is eligible for a free card from the Pierce County Library. Please bring valid photo ID and official indication of your address with you.

What Pierce County residents are eligible for a free Tacoma Public Library card?
All property owners or residents living in unincorporated Pierce County or residents of a military base within Pierce County are eligible for a free card.

The following cities or towns are annexed to, or are contracting with, Pierce County Library and their residents are eligible for a free Tacoma Public Library Card:

Bonney Lake
Buckley
DuPont
Eatonville
Edgewood
Fife
Peninsula (Gig Harbor)
Lakewood

Milton
Orting
South Prairie
Steilacoom
Sumner
University Place
Wilkeson

Residents of the following cities or towns are not eligible for a free Tacoma Public Library card as they are not annexed to or contracted with Pierce County Library:

Carbonado
Fircrest

Roy
Ruston

Can residents of other cities/ towns with reciprocal agreements with Pierce County Library get a free card from the Tacoma Public Library?
No. See above for eligibility.

Where do I return library materials?
Books must be returned to the library system from which they were checked out. Overdue fines will accumulate until such time the book is received by appropriate library system.

Where do I pick up books I have placed on HOLD?
Reserved books can only be picked up from the library system from which the HOLD was made.
